Summary
Two book chapters were published during the month of October, one by Karina Korostelina, and six journal articles, including from new S-CAR Professors Daniel Agbiboa, and Pamina Firchow. MS alumnus, Habtamu Dugo, just informed us of his new book, published in September. Alumni of the field, Charles Martin Sheilds and Mohammed Cherkoui each published reports. Eleven media articles by or about our community members, eight television interviews and one radio interview were broadcasted. Our faculty, including Daniel Rothbart, Patricia Maulden, Arthur Romano, Karina Korostelina and Alan Gropman were engaged in multiple local and international presentations. Hilmi Ulas, who had to change his dissertation defense date due to Hurrican Irma, defended at the end of the month.

Sandra Cheldelin, Professor Emeritus, and Molly Tepper, a PhD Candidate and staff member, provided a facilitation training workshop on October 29th, for the Fairfax County and Fairfax Interfaith Communities in Dialogue, in preparation for their upcoming public interfaith dialogue in November.
Rob Ericson, PhD '07, and adjunct professor, conducted an academic workshop, "Creativity in seventeen syllables - Haiku for learning" at the 9th Annual Innovations in Teaching and Learning Conference at Mason on September 22, 2017. The session emphasized that haiku can be used in any discipline, including the social and physical sciences to help students step back from a linear daily world and into a more creative learning environment. Participants crafted and shared haiku demonstrating a wide variety of learning and teaching applications.
Adina Friedman, and S-CAR alumna Mary Hope Schwoebel were "roundtable presenters" at the Seventh Annual Graduate Education Symposium, hosted this year by S-CAR alumna Pushpa Iyer at the Monterey Institute for International Studies, in Washington D.C on October 10th 2017.
Alan Gropman organized and provided a presentation in Mandarin via a translator for the Dean of The Schar School for Policy and Government, on the topic of think tanks on October 25th. He also presented at the West Point, on the topic of General Benjamin Earl Davis Jr. A West Point Association of Graduates then published an article this month from his August speech.

S-CAR Graduate Events, Arlington Campus
On October 3rd Alexander Cromwell, Ph.D. Candidate, participated in a panel discussion on the “Role of Peace Education in Conflict Zones” facilitated by the S-CAR Alumna Hodei Sultan who currently works for USIP.
On October 4, 2017, S-CAR, in cooperation with the organization World Peace and Reconciliation (WP&R), organized a discussion “Engaging Sudanese Diaspora in Conflict Mitigation” facilitated by Ph.D. Candidate Adeeb Yousif.
The S-CAR Student Association hosted a Resume Writing Workshop on October 4th for graduate students, in preparation for the S-CAR Internship and Career Fair later in the month.
On October 18 in cooperation with ArtWorks for Freedom and the University Libraries, S-CAR organized a Film Festival on the issue of Human Trafficking. Documentaries including “The True Cost”, “Not My Life” and “Trafficking Beyond Borders” were followed by brown-bag discussions.
On October 20, Maryam Abdallah, S-CAR Career Services Advisor and Lisa Shaw, Director of Student Services, hosted an Internship and Career Showcase featured leading organizations in the field for S-CAR students seeking future employment and professional development opportunities.
On October 23rd, S-CAR faculty, Julie Shedd and S-CAR PhD candidate Samantha Borders-Shoemaker, lead a public workshop on Media Literacy and Dialogue Skills in their recurring “Hot Topic: News Blues and How to Defuse” series at the Reston Regional Library.
The S-CAR Graduate Student Association hosted “Landmines and Peacebuilding: 20 years after the Mine Ban Treaty” presentation with the Executive director of HALO Trust (USA) Mr. Adam Jasinski. The discussion was facilitated by Emeritus faculty Dr. Sandra Cheldelin.
