S-CAR Activity Recap - February 2018

Summary

February’s contributions and activities focused heavily on politics and political analysis from the Middle East, Russia, Africa and Taiwan. Other commentary explored issues in the United States and their impacts on the national political sphere. This month, there was one book and one report, eleven newspaper articles, two television apperances and two radio broadcasts. Two faculty members engaged in three public presentations, sharing their research insights. Of especial note, S-CAR was named the ‘Number 1’ school for the study of conflict analysis and resolution.

Awards and Honors

Tatsushi (Tats) Arai, PhD ’05, was appointed a United Nations Senior Mediation Adviser.

 Dhirendra Nalbo, PhD candidate, and Joseph Obeng-Baah PhD candidate, were awarded Spring 2018 PhD completion grants.

Diane Perlman, visiting scholar, was included in a list of 100 Living Peace and Justice Leaders: In Pursuit of Peace, Justice, & Common Good – 100 Living Peace and Justice Leaders (List #2).

Books

Suzanne de Janasz, visiting faculty, and Dr. Bev DeMarr published a second edition of their text, Negotiation and Dispute Resolution published by the Chicago Business Press, February 2018.

Book Chapters

Terrance Lyons published a book chapter entitled “Peace Implementation and Quality Peace.” In Understanding Quality Peace: Peacebuilding after Civil War, 1st ed. It was 15 pages in length and published by Taylor and Francis, on February 9, 2018.

Mohammed Cherkaoui, PhD '12, wrote a report entitled “Contesting the Russia Collusion and the 25th Amendment: The Psychodynamics of a ‘Powerful’ Man at the White House” for AlJazeera Center for Studies, February 16, 2018.

Articles

Carlos Sluzki, recently published two articles: “How, of all the millions of people…: Reexamination of a question from an early MRI research project” In the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy (Feb.); “Humiliation and shame in the podium” Washington Psychiatrist, 7(2): 20-21. He also has a book chapter “Les histoires bien formées: vers l’orientation et évaluation des transformations narratives en thérapie » Chapter in Perrone R and Levy. J. (Eds,) La Création de l ‘environnement thérapeutique. (Book in preparation, in French).

Tompson Makahamadze, Phd candidate, wrote an article entitled A new beginning or return to autocracy in Zimbabwe for S-CAR News, February 28, 2018.

Buzz McClain published two articles about S-CAR for Mason University News. The first one published on February 7, 2018 was entitled “Mason Ranked No. 1 in Conflict Analysis and Resolution" and had a quote from Dean Kevin Avruch. The second was entitled “Studying Where Homelessness and Hope Intersect” and was published on February 20, 2018. The article highlighted the work being done by S-CAR MS student Janeth Chorlango and included quotes from Daniel Rothbart and Megan Price, PhD ’16.

Tehama Lopez Bunyasi presented her research in a talk entitled, “White America and the Racial Divide.” The panel was hosted by New America’s Fellows and Political Reform panel: Is Solidarity the Key to Bridging the Racial Divide? and televised live on C-SPAN. Washington D.C. February 20, 2018..

John Grover, MS student, was invited to speak about the latest US sanctions and diplomacy with North Korea, Fox5 DC News, February 25, 2018.

Ibrahim Fraihat, PhD ’06, spoke at a televised conference hosted by the Arab Center on "الاعتبارات السياسية لقرار نقل السفارة الأميركية –ندوة قرار نقل السفارة الأميركي - Moving the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem: The Legal and Political Significance” on February 28, 2018.

Rich Rubenstein delivered a sermon entitled "Where to Resist?" at St. Mark's Episcopal Church on Capitol Hill on February 4, 2018.  On February 11, he addressed the Seaside Jewish Community in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware on the topic, "How to Prevent Fascism in America."
