The Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution remembers Ingrid Sandole-Staroste, longtime supporter of peace and conflict resolution and partner to founding faculty member, Dennis Sandole.

Ingrid and Dennis moved to Northern Virginia when Dennis was offered a professorship at George Mason in 1978 and became parents to Timothy Sandole in 1985. Ingrid would later earn her BA and MA from Mason, with a PhD in sociology from the University of Virginia, where she focused her dissertation on the status of East German women following the collapse of the German Democratic Republic. She joined the Sociology and Anthropology Department at Mason and examined the status of women in society.

Ingrid’s dream was to pass on her knowledge to younger generations. When Dennis was diagnosed with cancer, she became his devoted caregiver and ensured he thrived despite his illness. With her support, he was able to continue work as professor and they collaborated on a number of important books in the field of Conflict Resolution, including the Handbook on Conflict Analysis and Resolution and Conflict Management and Problem Solving: Interpersonal to International Applications.

Ingrid established the Dennis Sandole Memorial Scholarship in 2018 to honor the legacy and impact of Dennis. This award recognizes students who carry forward his theoretical scholarship and also celebrates his commitment to international students and the armed services.

In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Ingrid’s legacy with a donation to the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution Scholarship Fund. Memorial Services will be held on Tuesday, November 28, 2023 at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home.
